Two pairs of Sparco three inch harness shoulder pads in black. Part number SAB1098S3-X2-Black.

Harness pads are one of the cheapest things you can buy that changes how a car feels to drive. A three inch shoulder strap pulled tight sits on your collarbone, and after twenty minutes you are aware of it. A pad spreads that and stops the webbing chafing through a suit, and the difference over a long stint is out of all proportion to what it costs.

What you get

Two pairs, so four pads. That does one car with a driver and a passenger, or gives you a spare set for a car that is shared.

They suit three inch shoulder webbing. If your harness has two inch shoulder straps, which is what FHR specific belts use, these will be too big and slide about. Tell us the harness and we will match the right size.

The one thing to check

If you run a head and neck restraint, be careful with pads. Anything between the strap and the yoke changes how the belt locates on the device, and some scrutineers will take a view on it. Where a HANS is in use the belt is meant to sit directly on the yoke. Ask your championship rather than assuming, and if in doubt run the pads on the lap straps only.

For a car without a head restraint they are simply a good idea.

Harness hardware and pad size guide

Everything in this category is sized to one number: the width of your harness straps. Get that right and the rest is straightforward.

2 inch and 50 mm are the same size. So are 3 inch and 75 mmOur harness fittings are labelled in millimetres and our harness pads in inches, so the same strap width looks like two different numbers depending on which page you are on. It is not. Convert once and you can shop across both.
Imperial Metric Where you will see it
2 inch 50 mm The common shoulder and lap strap width
3 inch 75 mm The wider shoulder strap, and some lap straps

Find your strap width

1Check the harness product pageEvery harness we sell lists its strap width, usually as something like “3 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap”.
2Or measure the webbingLay a strap flat and measure across it. It will be very close to 50 mm or 75 mm.
3Note that shoulder and lap can differA lot of harnesses run 3 inch shoulders with 2 inch laps. If yours does, you need pads to match each.

Of the harnesses we stock, 112 are 2 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, 38 are 3 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, 36 are 3 inch to 3 inch and 5 are 2 inch to 3 inch. So mixed widths are common rather than unusual.

Harness pads

Pads slide onto the shoulder straps and stop the webbing digging in over a long stint. They are sold to the strap width, so a 3 inch pad on a 2 inch strap will slide about and a 2 inch pad will not go over a 3 inch strap at all.

If your harness runs 3 inch shoulders, you want 3 inch pads, and the lap strap width does not come into it because pads go on the shoulders.

Eye bolts and fittings

Eye bolts give a clip-in harness something to clip to. They thread into a captive nut in the floor or into a reinforcing plate, and the snap hook on the harness clips through the eye.

Match the fitting to the strap width the same way. A 50 mm fitting suits a 2 inch strap and a 75 mm fitting suits a 3 inch one. If you are fitting a clip-in harness and your car has no suitable threaded points, this is the category you need, and it is worth sorting at the same time as the harness rather than after it.

Check what the mounting point is bolted intoAn eye bolt is only as good as what it threads into. Original seat belt mounting points are engineered for the job. A hole drilled in thin floor pan is not, and wants a spreader plate on the underside. If you are unsure what you are bolting to, send us a photo before you drill anything.

What else you might need

A clip-in harness needs eye bolts or existing threaded points. A bolt-in harness needs threaded points or brackets and no eye bolts at all. A wrap-around harness needs a cage bar in the right place and needs neither. Our harness size and fitting guide covers which installation type is which, and it is worth reading before you order hardware you may not need.

Tell us the harness and we will match the hardwareThe harness make and model, or just its strap widths, and whether it is clip in, bolt in or wrap around. Two minutes on the phone saves ordering the wrong pads twice. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

Strap widths read from our own product data across the harness, fitting and pad categories, checked 2 August 2026.
