How To Fit The Bimarco Dakar Into Your VW Golf Mk5
Fitting guide, January 2022
One of the questions we were asked most often at the start of 2022 was how to fit a Bimarco Dakar into a Volkswagen Golf Mk5. So we wrote this guide to the fitting kit you need for the Mk5, and why we chose it.
The short answer is a pair of M2 Motorsport sub-frames made for the Golf Mk5. We put together a package of two Dakar seats and two Mk5 frames, one for each side, with a discount applied.
- Recommended kit: M2 Motorsport Volkswagen Golf Mk5 sub-frames
- The M2 frames bolt to the Golf Mk5's original floor mounting points
- Floor mount, sliding runners and side mounts come as one kit
- M2 gave a 14 stone maximum driver weight for these side mounts
- The Bimarco Dakar is FIA 8855-1999 approved, in three colours

The fitting kit we recommend
For the Golf Mk5 we recommend the M2 Motorsport Volkswagen Golf Mk5 sub-frames. They are made for the car and share the bolt pattern of the Mk5’s original floor mounts, so they sit squarely on the floor with no drilling.
What we like is that the M2 kit is all in one. The floor mount, the sliding runners and the side mounts come together, so you are not matching up parts from different makers. That makes the job simpler and keeps everything lined up.
We tried the side mounts in store and they line up with the side bolting points of the Bimarco Dakar without any problems. The uprights have several bolt holes, so the height and tilt of the seat can be changed to get the driving position right.
There is one limit to know about. Because of the design of the M2 side mount brackets, M2 gave a maximum driver weight of 14 stone for this kit, to protect the strength of the frame. If you are heavier than that, talk to us before ordering.

The Bimarco Dakar
The Dakar is an FIA 8855-1999 approved Bimarco bucket seat. It was a popular way into motorsport for drivers who wanted an approved, well made seat without a big price. The shell is a single moulding in glass fibre reinforced plastic, which makes it strong and durable, and it came in three colours.
Garreth’s advice with any fixed back bucket in a road car like the Golf is to check the seat height once it is on the frame. Sit in it with your helmet on if you plan to use one, and use the bolt holes in the side mounts to get the headroom and the view over the wheel right.
The Dakar and Golf Mk5 package
To make ordering easy, we put together a package of two Bimarco Dakar seats and two M2 Golf Mk5 sub-frames, one for the driver’s side and one for the passenger’s, with a discount already applied. It was everything needed to put a pair of Dakars into a Mk5.
If the car is also getting harnesses, plan the anchor points at the same time. Our guide to fitting a motorsport harness explains the angles and mounting points.
