Momo racing seats

Momo started in 1964 when a racing driver had a steering wheel made for his own car and everybody else wanted one. The seats came later and they are a short, focused range: eleven of them, every single one FIA 8855-1999, and effectively one seat offered in three widths and two generations. That makes it one of the easiest ranges on the site to buy correctly.

The short version

Every Momo seat is FIA 8855-1999, so there is no approval decision to make. What there is instead is a width decision, and it is cheap: XL is £20 over standard and XXL is £30 on a Daytona, taking you from a 32 to 36 inch waist to a 36 to 40.

01 / The brand

A steering wheel company that makes seats

MOMO began in 1964 when Gianpiero Moretti, an Italian racing driver, had a local craftsman make a custom steering wheel for his own car. It gripped better than anything else on the grid, other drivers asked for the same, and the company came out of that. The name is simply Moretti and Monza run together.

Steering wheels are still what most people picture, and the seats carry the same approach: a small range, done properly, with nothing in it that is not FIA approved. All eleven seats we stock are homologated to FIA 8855-1999, they are all fibreglass, they are all side mount, and they all take a 6 point harness.

What that leaves you deciding is shape and width. Start, Super Cup and then the Daytona family, and the Daytona comes in standard, XL and XXL in both the original and the Evo shape. Six variations of essentially the same seat, £80 apart end to end.

03 / How to choose

Three questions, because the fourth is already answered

The approval decision is made for you on this brand, which leaves size, shape and mounting.

1

Skip the approval question

Every seat here is FIA 8855-1999, from the £349.99 Start to the £549.99 Daytona Evo XXL. That is unusual and it is useful, because on most brands the first decision is whether you are buying an approved seat or not, and on this one there is nothing to decide. Whatever you spend, you are buying a homologated seat, and the money goes on shape, width and support instead.

2

Get the width right, because it is cheap

This is where the value is. Standard Daytona and Daytona Evo are listed for a 32 to 36 inch waist and the XXL versions go to 36 to 40. Going up two sizes costs £30 on a Daytona and £50 on an Evo, which is the least any FIA seat brand on this site charges for the extra room. If you are anywhere near the top of a 36 inch waist, or you are over six foot, take the XL or the XXL. A bucket seat is supposed to hold you, but one you have to squeeze into will make a long stint miserable.

3

Then Start, Super Cup, Daytona or Evo

Four shapes, £200 apart end to end, all with the same approval. The Start at £349.99 is the plainest. The Super Cup at £449.99 sits in the middle. The Daytona at £469.99 is the one most people end up with, with head support and 6 point compatibility. The Evo is the newer shape at £30 more. If you can get to the showroom, sit in a Daytona and a Super Cup back to back, because that is the decision and thirty seconds settles it.

4

Budget for the mounting

Every seat here is supplied on its own. Momo side mounts are £129.99 a pair, and they are the tidy answer. If that is more than you want to spend, the QMS FIA approved steel side mounts are £26.50 and our own Endurance multi point M8 brackets are £39, and both suit a standard width side mount seat. You will also need a subframe for the car, so tell us what it is going in.

Momo is one of the few ranges where I never have to explain approvals, because there is nothing here that is not FIA. So the conversation goes straight to size, and the good news is that Momo barely charge for it. Twenty quid for an XL and thirty for an XXL. Corbeau and Recaro want a lot more than that for the wide versions. If you are a bigger driver and you want a homologated seat without paying a premium for the room, the Daytona XXL at five hundred quid is a proper answer.

The side mounts at £129.99 lead on volume, then the three XL and XXL Daytonas. That tells you something: the wide versions are what people actually buy from this brand, and at £20 to £30 over the standard width it is easy to see why.

Compare that third row against the rest of the site. Most brands treat a wide seat as a different product at a noticeably different price. On a Momo it is £20 for an XL and £30 for an XXL, on the same shell, with the same homologation. If you are between sizes here there is very little reason not to take the bigger one.

09 / Questions

Common questions about Momo seats

Who are Momo?

MOMO was founded in 1964 by the Italian racing driver Gianpiero Moretti, after commissioning a local craftsman to make a custom steering wheel for his own race car. Other drivers wanted the same thing and the company grew out of that. The name is the initials of Moretti and Monza, and the business is headquartered in Milan. Steering wheels are what most people know them for, and the seats are built to the same idea.

Are all the Momo seats FIA approved?

Yes. Every one of the eleven seats we stock is FIA 8855-1999. There is no road only option and no non approved version, which is unusual. Most brands on this site split their range between approved and unapproved, so if you are shopping for a competition seat and you want to stop thinking about approvals, this range is the shortest way to do it.

What is the difference between the Daytona and the Daytona Evo?

The Evo is the newer shape and it is £30 more at each size. Daytona at £469.99 against Daytona Evo at £499.99, XL at £489.99 against £529.99, XXL at £499.99 against £549.99. Both are FIA 8855-1999 fibreglass side mount seats with head support and 6 point harness compatibility, so this is a shape and generation choice rather than a specification one.

What does XL and XXL actually change?

Width, and it is the cheapest sizing upgrade of any FIA seat brand we sell. Standard Daytona and Daytona Evo are listed for a 32 to 36 inch waist. The XXL versions go to 36 to 40. On a Daytona that is £30 for two sizes up, and on a Daytona Evo it is £50. If you are near the top of a 36 inch waist, spend it, because a bucket seat you have to squeeze into is not a saving.

Which is the cheapest Momo seat?

The Start at £349.99, which is FIA 8855-1999 like the rest. Above it the Super Cup is £449.99 and then the Daytona family runs £469.99 to £549.99. Even the cheapest one here carries the same approval as the dearest, so the money is going on shape, size and support rather than on eligibility.

Do they come with side mounts?

No. All eleven seats are listed seat only, and the Momo side mounts are £129.99 a pair. If that is more than you want to spend on brackets, the QMS FIA approved steel side mounts are £26.50 and our own Endurance multi point M8 brackets are £39, and both suit standard width side mount seats. Tell us the car and we will match them.

Do they do a pair price?

On three of them. Two Super Cups are £899.98, two Daytonas are £939.98 and two Daytona Evos are £999.98. Those are exactly twice the single price, so unlike some brands there is no discount for taking two, but it does save you adding them separately.

Which one for a bigger or taller driver?

The Daytona XXL at £499.99 or the Daytona Evo XXL at £549.99, both listed for a 36 to 40 inch waist. Four of the eleven seats here are listed as suiting drivers over six foot. If you are between sizes, go up. It is £20 or £30 on this brand, which is the least any FIA seat range on this site charges for the extra room.

Come and see us

Tell us your waist size and the car

That is genuinely the whole conversation on this brand, because the approval question does not arise and the shape choice is between four seats. If you are near a 36 inch waist, say so, because the XXL is only £30 more and it will be the better seat for you. Ring and ask for Cameron.
