JP Cages roll cages
JP are the fourth cage brand we carry and they sit neatly between the other three. Half cages and DIY kits like SW Motorsports, but with a proper MSUK compliant competition range above them. The manufacturing is the most automated of the lot, CAD designed, 3D scanned, laser cut and robot welded. There is one buying trap on this brand and it is a costly one, so read the material section.
Half cages are Road and Track. Only the Bolt In Competition and Multipoint cages are MSUK compliant. And on the half cages the T45 material upgrade is explicitly not competition approved, so paying more does not buy you eligibility.
How JP build them
JP Cages work out of Lincoln and have been doing precision fabrication for over a decade. Cages, structural reinforcement and bespoke work.
The process is what stands out. Cages are designed in CAD from 3D scans of the actual shell, the tube is laser cut and CNC notched, and the welding is done by robot. That is a more repeatable way of building a cage than hand fabrication, and it is why these drop in cleanly.
On steel, the standard is E355+N cold drawn seamless, which JP state exceeds Motorsport UK requirements. BS4 T45 aerospace grade is offered as the lightweight option, with an important caveat covered further down this page.
Precision motorsport fabrication from a base in Lincoln.
The cage is designed from a scan of the actual shell rather than measured off a drawing.
Tube is laser cut and CNC notched, and the welding is automated, which makes the build repeatable cage to cage.
Cold drawn seamless steel that JP state exceeds Motorsport UK requirements, with BS4 T45 available where weight matters more than eligibility.
Six things to understand
A clean range once you separate the track day half cages from the competition cages, which is the line that actually matters.
01Half cages
The bulk of the range, around 118 of them. Behind the B pillar, bolt-in, and listed Road and Track. Typically £461 to £530.
02Competition cages
Bolt In Competition and Multipoint, and these are the MSUK compliant ones. If a scrutineer is involved this is the range you need. Around £681 to £750.
03DIY kits
Half cage kits from £240.50 and weld-in multipoint kits around £665. Roughly half the built price if you are prepared to do the work.
04Clubsport
A more braced half cage for cars used hard on track. RX-7 FD, E82 135i, Yaris GR and the TT RS in a GT3 style.
05CDS or BS4 T45
A dropdown on most half cages. CDS is the standard and the one regulations are written around. T45 is lighter, dearer, and not competition approved.
06Stripped or unstripped
The other dropdown, and it costs nothing. Stripped is for a car with the trim out, unstripped is cut to work around an interior that is staying in.
Four questions, in this order
The second one is the most expensive mistake available on this brand.
Competition or track day?
This decides the range. The Bolt In Competition and Multipoint cages are MSUK compliant. The half cages are Road and Track or MSA Approved, which is right for track days and fast road but will not pass a Motorsport UK scrutineer. No amount of material upgrading changes that, so start here.
Which material, and read this carefully
On a half cage you choose CDS or BS4 T45 at checkout. Taking the Astra Mk4 as the example, CDS is £461 and BS4 T45 is £681.50. The T45 is lighter and it is aerospace grade, and our listing labels it Unapproved for competition. So the more expensive option is the less eligible one. If you are chasing weight on a track car, fine. If eligibility matters at all, take the CDS.
Stripped or unstripped interior?
The other dropdown, and it is free either way. Stripped Interior suits a car with the trim already out. Unstripped Interior is cut to fit around an interior that is staying put. Getting this wrong means a cage that fouls trim or leaves gaps, so match it to the actual state of your build.
Built or DIY?
A DIY half cage kit starts at £240.50 against £461 built, and a DIY weld-in multipoint is around £665 against £681 for the bolt-in built version. The half cage saving is the significant one. If you have the time and the skills it is a lot of money for a weekend.
This is the one I would tell everybody. On a JP half cage the T45 option is two hundred and twenty quid more than the CDS and it is listed as unapproved for competition. People see the dearer aerospace steel and assume it is the better, more serious choice. For eligibility it is the opposite. Take the CDS unless you specifically want the weight saving and do not care about scrutineering.

The MSUK compliant range
This is the range to be in if you are being scrutineered. Bolt In Competition and Multipoint cages, MSUK compliant, covering the Audi Quattro, Fiesta Mk7, Civic EP3 and the R50 and R53 Mini. More bracing, more tube, and the paperwork behind them.

Weld-in, for the competition end
The multipoint cages as self-assembly weld-in kits at around £665. Nissan 350Z, Megane Mk2, GT86 and Scirocco Mk3. These are a bodyshop job to fit rather than a driveway one, so factor the welding in when you compare the price to a bolt-in.

More braced, for harder use
The step up in the half cage range for cars that get used properly on track. RX-7 FD and E82 135i at the lower end, then the Yaris GR and the TT RS in a GT3 style. Still half cages, so still check the approval against your regulations.

The choices on a JP cage
| Half cage | Competition cage | DIY half cage kit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approval | Road and Track or MSA | MSUK compliant | Road and Track |
| Best for | Track days, fast road | Scrutineered competition | Track days on a budget |
| Fitting | Bolt-in | Bolt-in or weld-in | You assemble it |
| Material choice | CDS or BS4 T45 | As listed per cage | CDS or BS4 T45 |
| Fitment choice | Stripped or unstripped | As listed per cage | Stripped or unstripped |
| Typical price | £461 to £530 | £681 to £750 | £240 to £296 |
The material note again, because it matters. Where a half cage offers BS4 T45, our listing labels that option Unapproved for competition, and it costs around £220 more than the CDS. Read the approval line on the variation you are actually adding to the basket, not just the one at the top of the page.
How the four compare
We carry four British cage brands and they genuinely serve different people. This is the short version.
If you are being scrutineered, JP competition cages, Custom Cages or the approved Safety Devices cages are your options. If it is a track day car, JP and SW half cages are the value answer. Our guides for each cover them in detail, and if you are unsure just ring us with the car and the regulations.
Common questions about JP Cages
Who are JP Cages?▾
A roll cage specialist based in Lincoln with over a decade in precision fabrication. The cages are CAD designed, 3D scanned to the shell, laser cut, CNC notched and robot welded, which is a more automated process than most of the trade uses.
Are JP cages MSUK compliant?▾
The Bolt In Competition and Multipoint cages are. The half cages are listed Road and Track or MSA Approved, which suits track days and fast road but will not satisfy a Motorsport UK requirement. Buy from the competition range if you are being scrutineered.
Why does the T45 option cost more but say unapproved?▾
Because it is a lighter aerospace grade steel that has not been through competition approval in that application. On a half cage the material choice is a dropdown, CDS or BS4 T45, and the T45 is roughly £220 more and is explicitly listed as unapproved for competition. Paying more here makes the cage less eligible, not more.
What is stripped and unstripped fitment?▾
A choice on most JP half cages, at no extra cost. Stripped Interior is for a car with the trim out. Unstripped Interior is cut to work around the interior that is still in the car. Pick the one that matches the state of your build.
How cheap is the DIY option?▾
JP DIY half cage kits start at £240.50 and most sit around £262 to £296. That is roughly half the price of the equivalent ready built half cage, and it is one of the two cheapest routes into a vehicle specific cage that we sell.
What steel do JP use?▾
E355+N cold drawn seamless as standard, which JP state exceeds Motorsport UK requirements, with BS4 T45 offered as the lightweight option. Remember the T45 option on the half cages is not competition approved.
What is a Clubsport cage?▾
A step up in the half cage range with more bracing, aimed at cars used hard on track. The RX-7 FD, E82 135i, Yaris GR and TT RS versions are the ones we hold.
Will a JP cage fit my car?▾
They cover 180 cages across Ford, BMW, VW, Renault, Honda, Vauxhall, Mini, Seat, Toyota, Peugeot, Porsche, Subaru and more, and they also do bespoke work. Ring us with the car if you cannot see it listed.
Check the material before you order
The CDS against T45 choice on a JP half cage changes both the price and the eligibility, and it is the one thing worth a phone call on this brand. Tell us the car and what you run in, and we will make sure the right variation goes in the basket. Ring and ask for Cameron.
