Volkswagen Rear Seat Delete Kits Are Now Available From Stern Performance
Rear seat delete kits, November 2020
We are pleased to introduce Stern Performance rear seat delete kits for our Volkswagen range. The kit takes out the rear bench and replaces it with a strut bar and a webbing net, and a made-to-fit carpet covers the floor that is left behind.
You can buy the full kit, or the carpet, net and strut bar on their own. Everything is handmade in Germany, with noise insulation in the carpet and a low overall weight, which is the point of taking the seats out.

What is on this page
What a rear seat delete kit is
A rear seat delete does what the name says. The rear bench comes out, which saves weight, and the space behind the front seats is finished off so it looks deliberate, not stripped. Stern’s version is often called a clubsport kit: a strut bar runs across the car where the seat back used to be, and a net made from seat belt style webbing hangs from it, closing off the gap between the cabin and the boot.
Stern describe the kit as plug and play, with no drilling. The bar sits at the height of the old seat back, and the net is held taut at the bottom by straps that clip to the existing eyelets in the boot.
From the back you can see how the kit sits. The bar runs from side to side, the net hangs beneath it to the floor, and with the carpet in, the rear of the car becomes one flat, trimmed area.
The Polo in this photo also has a roll cage behind the front seats, which shows the kit working alongside other motorsport parts.

The VW models we have kits for
Each kit is made for one body shape, so the bar length, the fixings and the carpet all match that car. At launch the VW range covers:
- Up!
- Polo 9N3, Polo 6C/6R and Polo AW
- Golf Mk2
- Golf Mk4 R32
- Golf Mk5 and R32
- Golf Mk6 and Golf R
- Golf Mk7 and Golf R
- Scirocco Mk3
When you order, tell us the model, generation and body style, and we will confirm it before anything is made.
The parts, and buying them separately
The strut bar is aluminium as standard, which can be powder coated in a range of colours, with a carbon fibre bar as the premium option. The net is high quality webbing in a choice of colours, and the carpet has a velour surface with synthetic leather edging.
Stern Performance was founded in 2017 in Kaltenkirchen, just north of Hamburg, and every part is handcrafted there by experienced tailors and upholsterers, so allow a few weeks for production. Because each part is sold on its own, you can start with the bar and net and add the carpet later.
Adding harnesses
The Stern strut bar is there to carry the net and is not sold as a harness mounting point, so if you are adding bucket seats and harnesses, the shoulder straps need their own proper anchorage. Our guide to fitting a motorsport harness covers the angles and anchor points, and Garreth is happy to talk through the options for your VW.
