Why We Love Caged Laser Roll Cages

Roll cages, March 2020

Caged Laser Engineering are roll cage and chassis makers based near Radstock in Somerset, and their cages have become some of our favourites. The fit and finish are the first thing you notice when one comes out of the box.

Here is why a cage matters, what Caged Laser do differently, and how to choose between a bolt-in cage, a rear cage and a weld-in build.

  • Caged Laser Engineering are based near Radstock, Somerset
  • They started out making roll bars and cages for Caterham Cars
  • They cut and prepare parts on their own laser equipment
  • The range runs from bolt-in rear cages to full custom cages
  • Popular fitments include Vauxhall, Toyota, Subaru, Renault, Nissan, Mini and Mazda models

What a roll cage does

A roll cage does two jobs. Its main job is to protect the people inside: if the car rolls or takes a heavy impact, the cage holds the shape of the cabin around the driver and passenger. Its second job is to stiffen the shell, which helps the suspension do its work and makes the car more consistent on track.

A cage also gives harnesses somewhere proper to mount. A rear cage with a harness bar is often what makes a set of bucket seats and harnesses work in a track day car, which is why we so often talk about seats, belts and cages together.

Why we like Caged Laser

Caged Laser began by making roll bars and roll cages for Caterham Cars, and they cut and prepare their parts on their own laser equipment. Accurate parts mean joints that meet properly, and a cage that lines up with the car when it goes in.

That is what we notice most. A cage that fits well is quicker to install, looks tidier when it is done, and sits where it should against the pillars and floor.

They are also a British maker, which helps when there is a question about a fitment or a part.

Bolt-in, rear or custom

Rear bolt-in cages cover the area behind the front seats. They are the usual choice for a road car that does the odd track day, because they bolt in without welding and can carry a harness bar for the shoulder straps.

Full bolt-in cages add the front hoop and door bars for more protection and stiffness, still without welding to the shell.

Custom and weld-in cages are for dedicated competition cars, built to the car and the rules of the championship.

Caged Laser make bolt-in cages and rear cages for a long list of popular cars, including the Vauxhall Corsa D VXR and Astra H VXR, Toyota GT86, MR2 and Celica, Subaru Impreza, Renault Clio and Megane, Nissan 200SX and Skyline R32, the classic Mini and Mini R53, and the Mazda MX5, RX7 and RX8.

Before you order a cage

If you compete, your championship’s rules decide what cage you need, so read them, and talk to your scrutineer, before you choose. Garreth’s advice is to plan the cage, seats and harnesses as one job, because each one decides how the others are fitted. Our guide on how to fit a motorsport harness covers the mounting side.

A rear cage covers the area behind the front seats; a full cage adds the front hoop and door bars for more protection and stiffness.

No. A bolt-in cage fits to the shell with bolts, which is why it suits road and track day cars.

Your championship’s rules decide that, so check them and your scrutineer before you order.
