The Recaro Classic Pole Position Arrives For 2020

New for 2020, March 2020

Recaro has added a Classic edition to the Pole Position range for 2020, and it has arrived. The Pole Position has been one of the most popular bucket seats for decades, and this version dresses it in the cloths of Recaro's older seats.

With its familiar shape and vintage covers, the Classic will look at home in a modern car or a classic one. Here is what it is, and how it compares with the other four Pole Position versions we list.

  • The Classic Pole Position is new to Recaro's range for 2020
  • Based on the road approved ABE version of the Pole Position
  • Trims include Caro, corduroy and Pepita cloths, and leather
  • Works with a standard 3 point belt or a 4 point harness
  • The seat weighs 7.0kg

What the Classic Pole Position is

The Classic is built on the ABE version of the Pole Position. That shell flares slightly at the hips, which gives more room to a wider range of driver shapes and sizes than the FIA version.

It is TUV approved and works with either a standard 3 point seat belt or a 4 point harness. At 7.0kg it also opens up some weight saving.

The trims are the reason to choose it: Caro, corduroy and Pepita cloth centres, or leather, the patterns Recaro used on its seats in the Seventies.

The five Pole Position versions

The Pole Position comes in five main versions, and we list each of them. The difference between them comes down to approval, shell width and trim.

VersionWhat sets it apart
Pole Position FIAFor motorsport. Narrower at the hips for more support, velour trim only, with the Recaro logo in bold on the headrest
Pole Position ABEFor road use. Wider at the hips, with trims including Ambla leather and suede centre panels

Pole Position CarbonThe ABE shape in a full carbon shell in place of fibreglass, for more rigidity and less weight

Which one to choose

If the car competes in events that need an FIA seat, it has to be the Pole Position FIA. The other four are road approved versions of the same family, and the choice between them is mostly about looks and budget. The Classic suits a restored or retro car where a modern cloth would look out of place, and the Carbon suits someone chasing weight and stiffness.

Garreth’s advice is to check the fit before the trim. The shell suits a driver under six feet, and the ABE versions give more room at the hips than the FIA. The seat mounts on Recaro side mounts and a frame for your car, both sold separately. Our guide to fitting Pole Position seats into a BMW E30 shows how that goes together in one popular classic.

It is a road approved seat. For events that need an FIA seat, choose the Pole Position FIA.

Yes. It works with a standard 3 point belt or a 4 point harness.
