Willans equipped their first Formula 1 World Champion in 1969 and there have been nineteen since. It is a family run British business that came out of aircraft harness manufacture, and you can still see that in the release box. The range looks complicated at first glance and it is not, because Willans put the entire specification in the product name.
The name is the specification. Series, then mounting points x straps, then application, then approval, then webbing widths. Read “Club 4×4 Saloon FIA Harness, 3 inch Shoulder and 3 inch Lap” and you already know everything except the price.
Aircraft harnesses that went racing
Willans were making safety harnesses for the aircraft industry when John Fenning set out to make motor racing safer, and in 1967 the two came together. Two years later Willans equipped a Formula 1 World Champion for the first time, and the count now stands at nineteen championships and 252 Grand Prix victories.
It is still a family run British business, based in Oxfordshire a few miles from Silverstone, which is where the top range takes its name. The aircraft origin has not gone anywhere either: the Club and Silverstone belts use what Willans describe as a lightweight planted aircraft type rotary multi point release box, and every belt in the range uses Willans own steel adjusters.

Three series and three things that vary

01Supersport
The road range, £76.45 to £105. Approved to ECE No. 16 and explicitly not FIA. 45mm webbing throughout, steel adjusters, clip in fittings with eye bolts supplied.
02Club
The FIA range, £179 to £225. 4 point, 6 point and 3 point versions, 2 and 3 inch webbing, and the aircraft type rotary release box. The Club 4×4 Saloon is our best selling Willans belt.
03Silverstone
The top FIA range, £234.82 to £315, named after the circuit down the road. Saloon, Caterham, LDT6 and single seater versions, with more webbing combinations than the Club.
04The configuration code
Mounting points first, straps second. 4×4 is a 4 point on four mountings, 4×3 is a 3 point on four mountings, 6×6 is a 6 point. T6 and LDT6 are the 6 point saloon models.
05Kit car versions
Caterham and Westfield versions across all three series, £80 to £292.92. Kit cars mount differently to saloons, so buy the version built for the car rather than adapting.
06Single seaters
Silverstone 622, 623, 632 and 633, £241.43 to £268. The numbers are the webbing combination, and the 622 at 2 inch throughout is the head restraint specific one.

Learn to read the name, because it is the spec
Every Willans title runs in the same order: series, configuration, application, approval, webbing. Take “Silverstone 4×4 EXG FIA Harness, 3 inch Shoulder and 2 inch Lap”. That is a Silverstone series belt, four mounting points carrying four straps, the EXG version, FIA approved, with 75mm shoulder straps and 50mm lap straps. Nothing important is hidden in the description. Once you can read one title you can read all 38.
Road or FIA, which decides the series
Supersport is ECE No. 16, which is a road seat belt approval, and the listings say plainly that they are not FIA approved. That is the right answer for a road car and it starts at £76.45. Club and Silverstone are the FIA ranges, starting at £179 and £234.82. The gap between a Supersport 4×4 at £98.50 and a Club 4×4 at £179 buys you a competition approval, the aircraft type rotary release box and 3 inch webbing rather than 45mm.
Then the configuration, and it is more precise than most
The two numbers are mounting points and straps. A 4×4 is a 4 point on four mountings. A 4×3 is a 3 point on four mountings, which suits cars where the geometry will not take a 4 point. A 6×6 or a T6 or LDT6 is a 6 point. This matters because two belts described elsewhere as 4 point can mount completely differently, and Willans tell you which is which in the title.
Last, the webbing, and it changes the price
Most models come in more than one webbing combination and they are not the same money. A Club 4×4 Caterham is £184.51 with 3 inch shoulders onto 2 inch laps and £225 with 3 inch onto 3 inch. If you run a head restraint you want 2 inch shoulders, and the Silverstone LDT6 FIA HANS at £289 is the one built for that. If you do not, 3 inch shoulders spread the load and are what most saloon and GT cars use.
Willans is the brand I wish everybody sold like. The title tells you the series, the mounting, the approval and the webbing, in that order, every time. The top of the range
The 4×4 EXG at £292, the 4×4 at £305 and the LDT6 at £294.78. The last one is the HANS specific version at £289, with the shoulder straps stepping down to 50mm where they pass over the device, and it is designed for use with a head restraint only.

The numbers describe the webbing: the 633 is 3 inch onto 3 inch at £241.43, the 632 is 3 inch onto 2 inch, the 623 is 2 inch onto 3 inch, and the 622 at £267 is 2 inch throughout and the head restraint specific one.

The second row is the one to decide on. ECE No. 16 is a road seat belt approval and FIA is a competition one, and the Supersport listings say plainly that they are not FIA approved. Neither is better than the other, they answer different questions, and the £80 between a Supersport 4×4 and a Club 4×4 is the price of a competition approval rather than a better belt.

What does 4×4 or 4×3 mean?▾
Mounting points first, straps second. A 4×4 is a 4 point harness on four mounting points. A 4×3 is a 3 point harness that still uses four mounting points. Which one do I need for a road car?▾
A Supersport. They are ECE No. 16 approved, which is a road seat belt standard, and they are explicitly not FIA approved. The 4×3 at £76.45 is the cheapest way into the brand and the 4×4 at £98.50 is the 4 point version. There are Caterham and Westfield specific versions at £80 to £105, and a detachable tail version at £91.75 to £99.50 for cars where the tail strap needs to come out.
Do they do Caterham and Westfield harnesses?▾
Both, across all three series. Supersport Caterham at £105 and Westfield at £80 to £84.61 on the road side. Club Caterham at £184.51 and £225 and Club Westfield at £190.09 and £202.76 on the FIA side. Silverstone Caterham at £289 to £292.92. Kit cars mount differently to saloons, so buy the version made for the car rather than adapting a saloon belt.
What about single seaters?▾
The Silverstone 622, 623, 632 and 633 are the single seater 6 point belts, £241.43 to £268. The 622 is the head restraint specific one with 2 inch shoulders and 2 inch laps. The numbers describe the webbing combination, so the 623 is 2 inch shoulders onto 3 inch laps and the 632 is the other way round.
Which webbing combination should I pick?▾
If you run a head restraint, 2 inch shoulders are the ones that pass over it, and the Silverstone LDT6 FIA HANS at £289 is built specifically for that. If you do not, 3 inch shoulders spread the load more and are what most saloon and GT cars use. Lap straps are usually 3 inch on a 4 point and 2 inch where a crotch strap takes some of the work. The price varies with the combination, so compare the versions of the same model.
