After market seats will NOT directly fit your cars original equipment as that equipment was made specifically for the seats that came with your vehicle. The seats we sell have to be made using universal bolting points to allow fitment in a variety of ways to a vast number of vehicles and applications.
The following guide and information has been created to help eliminate a large number of FAQ's and provide precise details on fitting racing seats. Its also very important to read this to stop any confussion when it comes to fitting our products.
So how can you fit seats into your vehicle?
Option 1: Purchase a set of seats, take out your original seats and modify your original equipment to accept the new seats.
Option 2: Purchase a set of seats and universal frames. Take out your original seats and equipment and modify the universal frames to fit your make and model.
Option 3: Purchase a set of seats and (where possible) direct fitment frames. Take out all your original equipment and bolt the new products in using all the cars original fixing points.
So which option should you choose?
Firstly you need to check if direct fitment frames are available for your make and model for option 3 to be possible. This is the best option when its available If not then we recommend options 1 or 2 listed above.
In ALL situations we strongly advise that you use a qualified mechanic and a garage or workshop to complete the fitment. This is to ensure the safety of your self and passengers. Its also important the work is carried out to a high degree of quality when modifications are made.
What exactly are direct fitment frames? (Option 3)
After-market seats like the Corbeau Boss reclining sport seats are fitted in a vehicle using a fitment frame or more commonly known as a subframe. A subframe is an interface between the unique fixing points of a specific vehicle model and the base of an aftermarket seat.
Tailor made frames are specifically made to use the original bolt points of the original seats to attach the new seat. This allows quick fitting with no modifications required and is the preferred method of fitment.
With so many brands, which frames should you use?
We strongly recommend you only use the correct subframe for the correct seat. If you have a Cobra Daytona reclining car seat as shown in this photos, we recommend using a Cobra sub frame for your car to make sure fitment is 100% perfect.
By using the correct branded products fitment will be straight forward and all bolt holes will line up for easy fitment to your sports seats and your car. Using frames by different manufactures may result in modifications being required.
How do you bolt direct fitment frames into your vehicle?
Sub frames come in all shapes and sizes depending on the shape of your cars floor plan. These bolt directly into your original fixing points to create an extremely secure and safe seating position. No custom fitting should be required and they are MOT legal.
Sub frames are commonly and primarily used for road use for this very reason. They however are not FIA approved for competitive racing, side mounts would be required to use racing seats for this purpose. That is explained in a seperate guide.
What will you receive and do they work with the original seat belts and equipment?
95% of the direct fit subframes that are available are complete direct replacement frames which replace all your original equipment. A select few may be adaption bars or items to work with your original parts.
All direct fit frames have bolting points to allow you to attach the pretensioners from existing seatbelts to the frames. This is to allow you to pick between using standard seatbelts or harness belts.
So what if direct fitment frames are not available (Option 1 &2)?
When direct fitment frames are not available modifications may be required to the original equipment or to some universal frames.
This is usually quiet straight forward and when completed by a skilled mechanic from experience we recommend you allow for 2 hours labour per seat. Each base mounted seat online uses just 4 standard bolt points which are easy to work with.
What type of frames are available?
All direct fitment subframes slide backwards and forwards.
Universal frames are supplied as a solid fixing kit, runners can be purchase seperately to allow the sliding movement.
Some frames also allow a tilt mechanism when using base mounted bucket seats for more access to the rear as bucket seats do not have a built in tilt mechanism like reclining car seats. This will be noted on the listings.
Should you stay clear of seats that do not have direct frames available?
There are many cars on the market where direct subframes are not available. However if you still want to replace the seats in your car do not panic. Custom fitment is not that complicated or time consuming.
We recommend you choose the seat you like the look of the best and use a local garage to modify your original seat frame to bolt to the new seat. This may take some fabrication work and a small bit of time but should be worth it for the finished effect and provide you with exactly what you want.
What if i see seats in another car i like and want to fit in mine?
If you found some seats that look great in another car as standard like the Civic Type R or some Recaro seats from a Ford Cosworth and want to put them in your car. Sadly we won't be able to help with subframes. The manufactures tell us that the up to date frames for their current range of aftermarket seats can have considerably different bolting points compared to factory standard seats.
All subframes are tailor made from each manufacturer to fit their own specialist seats. This means bolt holes and fitments may be very different to the seats you are wanting to install. In this case we would recommend custom work.
